Panniculectomy in Farmington Hills
A panniculectomy removes excess skin and fat from the lower abdomen, often called an apron belly, to improve comfort and mobility. Performed by Dr. Michelle Hardaway, a board-certified plastic surgeon with over 20 years of experience.
What a panniculectomy addresses
A panniculectomy removes loose skin and fat from the lower abdomen. It is often recommended after significant weight loss or pregnancy has left an overhang of excess skin that affects daily life. Because it mainly improves comfort and mobility, it is not considered a cosmetic procedure.
Panniculectomy or tummy tuck?
A tummy tuck removes excess skin and also tightens the abdominal muscles, which suits people with muscle laxity after pregnancy or significant weight loss. A panniculectomy removes skin and fat only, for patients who do not need muscle tightening, such as those who have reached their weight loss goal but are left with loose skin.
Which procedure fits your goals and health is decided with Dr. Hardaway at consultation.
How the procedure is performed
A panniculectomy is an outpatient procedure under general anesthesia. A horizontal incision is made between the pubic hairline and the belly button, sometimes with a vertical incision as well. The shape and width of the incision depend on how much skin needs to be removed. An incision is also made around the belly button. The skin of the upper abdomen is drawn down, and the excess is trimmed and sutured.
Combining with liposuction
A panniculectomy can be performed on its own, but is often combined with liposuction. Small incisions are made near the treatment areas, and a thin cannula removes fat deposits by suction. The fat can also be transferred to help shape other areas. Liposuction can treat areas such as the thighs, arms and back, which helps patients who have lost significant weight address both excess skin and remaining fat.
Recovery
You go home the same day, so arrange for someone to drive you. A compression garment supports the abdomen and limits swelling. It is worn for three to six weeks, except when showering. Surgical drains may be placed and are removed five to ten days after surgery.
Most patients return to work and normal activity two to three weeks after surgery, depending on the physical demands of the job, and only once cleared by Dr. Hardaway. Full recovery takes several months, with regular follow-up appointments along the way.
Risks
All surgery carries risk. Bruising and swelling are the most common. There is a risk of infection if the area is not cared for properly, and blood clots and nerve damage are possible but uncommon. Following the aftercare instructions closely reduces these risks, and no outcome can be guaranteed.
Cost
Cost depends on the extent of the procedure and on any additional surgery, such as liposuction, performed at the same time. Dr. Hardaway provides a detailed estimate at consultation covering the procedure from consultation through post-operative care.

Panniculectomy FAQ
Results can last many years. Weight changes and pregnancy can alter them. A stable weight and healthy diet and exercise habits help prolong the result.
