Face and neck plastic surgery consists of a multitude of procedures that vary from cheek augmentations, facelifts, fat transfers to the face and other combined procedures that help provide a more youthful appearance.
How face & neck cosmetic surgery can improve the visible signs of aging?
• Relaxation of the skin of the face causing sagging
• Deepening of the fold lines between the nose and corner of the mouth
• Fat that has fallen or has disappeared
• Jowls developing in the cheeks and jaw
• Loose skin and excess fat of the neck that can appear as a double chin or “turkey neck”
• Reduces the wrinkle lines that develop horizontally across the forehead, as well as those that occur on the bridge of the nose, between the eyes
• Improves frown lines, the vertical creases that develop between the eyebrows
• Raises sagging brows that are hooding the upper eyelids
• Places the eyebrows in an alert and youthful positionAmerican Society Of Plastic Surgeons
A facelift restores a more pleasing contour to your face and neck. A facelift can be done alone, or in conjunction with other procedures such as a forehead lift, eyelid surgery, or nose reshaping. Ask Dr. Hardaway and the cosmetic specialists at Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and Laser Center about the facelift procedure that is right for you.
Full lips with an accentuated border have often been associated with beauty and youth. Lip augmentation enhances the contour and fullness of lips for a younger, healthier appearance. Unfortunately, our lips are subject to sagging as we age. The colored portion of the lips thins out and the arch of the upper arch (cupid’s bow) flattens. This problem is especially noticeable in women with naturally thin lips.
Fat grafting is available as a surgical alternative. Other surgical options include Gore-Tex implants or the use of Alloderm to provide greater definition and a well-defined border.
Lip augmentation is appropriate for patients who wish to enhance the lips they were born with and for patients who wish to restore their lips that the aging process has taken away.
When consulting Dr. Hardaway for lip augmentation she will discuss both non-surgical and surgical options that are available in her facility. Dr. Hardaway performs filler injections such as Juvederm® and Restylane® for patients who prefer non-surgical treatments for lip augmentation.
We have all heard the saying “The eyes are the windows to your soul”. The signs of premature aging, such as dark circles, sagging upper and lower eyelids, fine lines and wrinkles, can make you look tired and older. Eyelid lift (or blepharoplasty) is the recommended and most often preferred treatment for removing bags under the eyes or drooping eyelids. These aging eye conditions can add years to your appearance and even impair your vision.
Nose surgery, also known as rhinoplasty or a nose job, is a surgical procedure to change the proportions of the nose. This includes nose size, humps on the nose, the width of the nose bridge, nostril size, and drooping or upturned nasal tips.
A brow lift is a procedure that lifts and tightens the forehead skin specifically. A brow lift does not treat the eyelids especially. If a surgery targeting the eyelids is preferred, eyelid surgery, also known as a blepharoplasty, or an eye lift, is a surgery that can improve the appearance of the eyelids. This procedure can get rid of droopy eyelids and sagging skin around the eyes, and removes excess fat around the eyes, making the eyes look youthful and more open.
A neck lift, also known as a lower rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure used to tighten loose skin around the lower jaw and neck. A facelift, also known as a rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure that tightens the skin on the entire face below the forehead, including the jowls. The pricing for a face or neck lift procedure varies from patient to patient. These procedures can be combined, or performed separately, or combined with other procedures. To perform a neck lift, incisions are made under the chin or behind the ears to access the neck muscles. The skin and muscles are tightened, then secured. Full recovery from a neck lift procedure can take about six to eight weeks, though normal work and activities can be resumed when cleared by the doctor. A neck lift is often combined with a facelift or brow lift. During your consultation, Dr. Hardaway will help find the procedure or combination of procedures and plan that is right for you.
What is fat transfer to the face? With normal aging, there is fat loss in the face. This can be replaced with one’s own fat or fillers such as hyaluronic acids or similar products. Fat is often used when replacement is needed in multiple areas of the face. The volume replacement helps give a more youthful appearance. Fat transfer to the face is often used in conjunction with a face lift or by itself. As with fat transfer in other areas of the body, it is important to follow post-operative instructions for optimal fat survival.
Facial implants are implants that enhance or change the shape and structure of the face. Cheek, jaw, and chin implants are the most commonly used types of implants in the face. Facial implants are most commonly made of silicon.
Cosmetic ear surgery, also known as otoplasty, is a surgical procedure that changes the position, size, or shape of the ears. This is commonly used to correct protruding or misshapen ears.
As we age, lower parts of the face can sag, and the skin can become loose. Volume of certain areas of the face decreases, and the texture of the skin changes. This can heavily affect areas of skin under the chin, causing jowls, and large amounts of loose skin around the neck and chin. Liposuction of the chin, also known as submental liposuction, neck liposuction, or lipectomy, removes fatty deposits from areas around the chin and neck. Liposuction of the chin can improve the contour of the chin and jawline, get rid of a double chin or unwanted fullness underneath the chin, and make the face appear thinner overall. Although the basis for liposuction is removal of fat deposits, liposuction is not a substitute for weight loss. If you are planning on losing a large amount of weight, you should to talk to your doctor about the best time to have the procedure. Usually, this is when you are close to your weight loss goals, or you have already achieved them. Dr. Hardaway will help you find the ideal time and procedure plan that works best for you.
Chin liposuction is often combined with other procedures such as a neck lift or facelift, to remove lose skin and contour all areas of the face. Typically, those who are in their twenties through early fifties have better skin elasticity, which is necessary for the skin to contract smoothly after liposuction, and are good candidates for the procedure. But, there are other procedures that can help contour the jawline, as well as other areas of the face and neck.
Alternatively, if you are looking for a non-surgical procedure, injections could be a good option for you. These are fillers, injected into or around the jawline to help enhance the contour and appearance. Dr. Hardaway performs all of these services at her office. Other nonsurgical options for removal of unwanted fatty deposits under the chin is Kybella. Multiple treatments of Kybella are needed. Dr. Hardaway will evaluate you to see if you are candidate for these treatments.
A neck lift is a surgical procedure used to tighten loose skin around the lower jaw and neck. This is a good option for those who are older, and looking to remove larger amounts of loose skin. To perform the surgery, incisions are made either under the chin or behind the ears, to access the neck muscles. The skin and muscles are then tightened and secured. This tightens the muscles around the neck, as well as the skin, smoothing out wrinkles and creases in the skin. It also improves the appearance of vertical neckbands. This surgery is often combined with procedures such as a facelift.
Botox to muscles of the neck is another, less invasive, option to help alter the appearance of the neck. This can help tighten the muscles around the neck, resulting in a tighter appearance of the neck overall. This can be used in conjunction to neck lift surgery and other procedures, or own its own. Dr. Hardaway performs these procedures at her office as well. During your consultation, she will help you find the course of action that will help suit your specific needs.
The cost of chin liposuction varies from patient to patient. Prices vary depending on the intensity of the procedure, as well as if the surgery is combined with other procedures. Dr. Hardaway will discussion pricing at your consultation.
The patient is under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with IV sedation (twilight anesthesia) for the procedure. A very thin tube called a cannula is inserted, through small incisions, under the skin to reach fat deposits. The cannula is attached to a vacuum, and the doctor will move the tube under the skin, to suction out fatty deposits under the chin and neck. The fat can also be inserted and repositioned within or around the face, to further contour and shape the face and jawline. Liposuction is an outpatient procedure, so the patient will be sent home when they are awake after the procedure is completed. Patients should plan on having someone to drive them home from the procedure.
Liposuction is a minimally invasive procedure, so recovery is not as long as that of a more invasive surgery. You should remain upright immediately after surgery, as well as in the following days, to reduce swelling and help facilitate the healing process. The patient will typically wear a compression for the few days or so after surgery, to help keep pressure on the area under the chin. Swelling and bruising are normal after the procedure, but are minimal. Patients can normally return to work after several days, depending on the physical activity of the job. Normal physical activity can usually be resumed 2 to 3 weeks after surgery. Do not resume normal physical activity or return to work until cleared by the doctor.
Results from liposuction lasts for many years, as the fat is removed from the body. However, natural processes such as weight gain, aging, factors from pregnancy, and other lifestyle factors, including genetics, can cause variations. Following the doctor’s specific instructions after surgery will help the results from your procedure last as long as possible. If you are in the process of losing weight, it is best to be near or at your weight loss goal before having the procedure done. This will ensure the best and longest lasting results from the procedure.
As with any surgical procedure, there are risk associated with liposuction. The most common risks include bruising and swelling after the procedure. As with any surgical procedure, there is a risk of infection if not taken care of properly. Strictly following the doctor’s instructions for aftercare can help decrease the chance of these risks.
Someone is an ideal candidate for chin liposuction if:
• They are looking for a procedure that will remove excess fat from under the chin or around the neck and help shape the jawline.
• They have good skin elasticity.
• They are generally in good health.
• They do not smoke or drink excessively.
• They do not have any medical conditions that can impair or slow the healing process.
• They have realistic goals for the outcome of the surgery.
Dr. Hardaway will work with patients to determine which path will be best to meet their needs.
