Among all plastic surgery procedures, nose enhancement, or rhinoplasty, is among the most common. Nose enhancement can be performed on any part of the nose to increase or reduce its size, to modify the size and shape of the nostrils, tip of bridge or the nose, or to alter the slope or angle of the nose. It can make a larger nose smaller, straighten a crooked nose, alter the slope of the nose, change the shape of the nasal tip, and more. Rhinoplasty may also be performed to correct an injury or birth defect, or to improve breathing. Nasal plastic surgery can include reshaping of the nasal bone and the bone and cartilage structure of the nose, to change the profile and nostril shape of the nose.
How many types of nose surgeries are there?
The structures of the nose are made up of skin, cartilage, and bone. When a nose job is performed, all of these structures can be altered. Surgery can be used to improve breathing and function of the nose, solely to change appearance, or change both.
There are two different types of incisions that are used for rhinoplasty. For closed rhinoplasty, incisions are made inside of the nose. For open rhinoplasty, incisions are made across the strip of skin that separates the nostrils, also referred to as the columella. If a closed rhinoplasty is performed no scarring will be visible, as the incisions are made on the inside of the nose. If an open rhinoplasty is performed, a small scar may develop on the skin that separates the nostrils. However, this scar is easily hidden and is not visible in most people. The surgical technique used depends on the individual anatomy of each patient. The technique of surgery that is best for you will be discussed with your consultation with Dr. Hardaway. Both are used to create natural looking results after surgery.
Other types of nose surgery include correcting a deviated septum to help improve breathing. This is often referred to a s septoplasty, and can be done in combination with reshaping of the nose, or done on its own. Rhino-septoplasty can also be performed to fix nasal deformities. The cost of nasal surgery performed to fix breathing issues, deformities, or birth defects can sometimes be covered by insurance.

Are rhinoplasties safe and how long do they last?
Rhinoplasties are a small surgery, and they are safe to perform. The risks and benefits of the surgery will be discussed during your consultation. The results of a rhinoplasty are meant to be permanent. For the best and longest lasting results, make sure to follow the doctor’s instructions carefully after surgery.
What is the best age to get a nose job?
It is important that the nose has finished growing before nose job surgery is performed. Usually growth is complete by age sixteen. However, this varies from patient to patient. Dr. Hardaway will help you make the best decision for your needs.
Dr. Hardaway often uses computer imaging before surgery to get an idea of the changes that you may want. This helps in preoperative planning. Rhinoplasty is usually performed under local or general anesthesia in an out-patient setting. An incision is made inside the nose and the bone and cartilage framework is then shaped and sculpted as desired. (Sometimes a small incision is made on the outside of the nose depending on the nature of the surgery). The skin is then re-draped over the new framework and a splint is applied to help your nose maintain its new form. In some cases, splints may be inserted in the nostrils to provide additional stability. The surgery takes about 1-3 hours to perform. It is an outpatient surgery, and patients are able to return home after surgery.
Are Nose Jobs Painful?
Following surgery, bruising, swelling and discomfort can be expected, but all can be decreased and managed with cold compresses and medication. Splints and stitches are removed within a week or two. Patients may return to work a few weeks after surgery, depending on the type of job. Strenuous activities may be resumed within a few months. This pain is normally tolerated well by patients, and results from the procedure are worth it!
Who is a good candidate for rhinoplasty?
Someone is a good candidate for rhinoplasty if they wish to change the shape, size, or proportions of the nose. This procedure can also help balance facial features and symmetry of the face.
