A tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty, improves the appearance of the abdomen. Excess skin and fat are removed and the abdominal muscles are tightened, producing a flatter, smoother and more toned abdominal profile. It also repairs the stretching of muscle and tissue that occurs with pregnancy.

Muscle repair, not just skin Separated vertical abdominal muscles are stitched together in the midline, which is what gives a flatter, firmer profile rather than a tighter surface.
Under general anesthesia The surgery is performed under general anesthesia, so you are asleep for the procedure and monitored throughout by the surgical team.
Under general anesthesia, Dr. Hardaway makes a horizontal incision just above the pubic area and a circular incision around the belly button to free it from the surrounding skin. The abdominal skin is separated from the underlying tissue to reveal the vertical abdominal muscles, which are stitched together in the midline where they have separated.
Excess fat, skin and tissue are removed from the abdomen and sides, and the remaining skin is pulled taut and stitched, creating a slimmer waistline. In some cases liposuction is used alongside to remove stubborn fat deposits.
The belly button is then repositioned and stitched into place through the circular incision, and dressings are applied over the incisions.
Dr. Hardaway performs your abdominoplasty herself, at her own accredited surgical center in Farmington Hills. During your consultation she will review your health and surgical history to determine if a tummy tuck is the best option for you.

A full tummy tuck uses an incision from hip to hip above the pubic area, removes loose skin, tightens the abdominal muscles and repositions the belly button. A mini uses a shorter incision, addresses only the area below the navel and does not reposition the belly button. An extended uses a longer incision that also targets the flanks and love handles.

Most patients can expect recovery to last two to four weeks . The first week is the most restrictive, with pain, swelling and bruising, and you will need help with daily tasks. In the second week mobility returns, swelling starts subsiding, non-dissolving sutures come out around 10 to 14 days , and desk work is often possible. Weeks three and four bring a significant improvement in comfort, light exercise such as walking, and a return to a normal routine for most people by the end of the fourth week. Individual experiences vary and this is not instruction for your case. Attend every follow-up appointment; Dr. Hardaway monitors your recovery and gives you your own plan.
Sometimes. In some cases liposuction is used during the tummy tuck to remove stubborn fat deposits alongside the skin and tissue removal. Whether that applies to you is decided by Dr. Hardaway based on your own needs and goals.
